King – 5’0 x 6’6″ | 150cm x 200cm

This will give you:

  • 15cm extra width

Copper Mattress – Our New Mattress from Highgrove Beds

Why a Copper Mattress?

We are always on the look out for the most innovative products that are designed with sleep in mind. So, we are especially excited to introduce our Copper Mattress range from Highgrove Beds.

Copper Abstract Image

This material is an essential nutrient in our body and it offers many health bodies. It also has huge benefits when used in a mattress. By infusing copper with foam, Highgrove have been able to create a mattress that offers a cool, clean and healthy sleeping surface.

Is a Copper Mattress in Anti Inflammatory?

Athletes have long since used copper bracelets and copper socks to help with joint pain. This is because Copper help reduce joint inflammation and arthritis due to it being essential in the formation of connective tissue in the body.

What are the Anti Bacterial Properties of Copper?

Copper can help prevent bacteria from living inside your mattress. Copper works to actively prevent the growth of bacteria and various fungi. This can help to prevent odours from developing and keep your mattress clean. Studies have shown that copper has anti-microbial properties and offers beneficial effects when exposed to humans.

How does Copper Benefit Your Mattress

Highgrove have developed the mattress with coppers anti-microbial properties in mind. The copper creates a film of protection on top of the foam which is closest to the sleeping surface of the mattress. This process also adds another level of support to your mattress. The copper will support the heavier parts of the body aligning the spine whilst you sleep.

Aide Recovery

Copper can also aide recovery by improving blood flow by maintaining iron levels, and reduce the build up of lactic acid in your muscles. By incorporating copper in the mattress it can improve recovery rate whilst you sleep at night.

Copper and Heat

Copper is one of the most conductive materials on earth, with conductivity 20,000 times higher than that of conventional polythene foam. When copper particles are placed within the cell structure of the memory comfort it allows heat to escape resulting in a cooling effect. Overheating while sleeping is never good and it is recommended to be 16 -19 degrees Celsius in the bedroom. If your mattress is too hot it is likely fighting against you to get a better night’s sleep.

By adding this innovative Sleep Technology to your mattress, Highgrove have been able to allow you to reap the benefits of a clean, cool and comfortable night’s sleep. The material is not only anti-microbial but can also help with arthritis. Plus, it is the perfect addition for any bed that wants to be cooler and cleaner.

Bedframes and Bases – Three Things You Need to Know

Image showing a notebook with the words New Year New You, on a plain white background with a green cactus in the top left hand corner.

The New Year sometimes calls for a bit of a change, whether that be a new hair style – or a bit of a revamp in the bedroom. We of course are going to focus this blog on the latter, looking particularly at the headboards, divan and bedframes.

If your mattress is in good working order and still performing how it should, but you fancy a change then focusing on your bed base is a great place to start. There are however a few things to consider when looking to buy a new bed without a mattress.

1. Is Your New Bedframe or Base Suitable For Your Current Mattress?

Image of sprung wooden slatted bed base up close

A Divan base can either be sprung (springs within the base) or solid. A Bed frame usually has flat slats or sprung slats.  It may be worth noting what your current base is, as placing a your existing mattress on a sprung base can change the feel ever so slightly. Sprung bases tend to have a bit more give in them, whereas a solid top base can make the mattress feel firmer.

It is important to recognise, that some mattresses require certain bases. For example: a latex or foam mattress may need ventilation and only be suitable for a sprung or slatted base. Whilst others may perform better on a solid top.

When Buying a bedframe be aware of the slats – general guidelines stipulate that the slats be no more than 7cm apart, anymore than this and you can seriously compromise your mattress and invalidate your guarantee.

2. Is it the Right Fit?

Beautiful deep buttoned grey bedframe. Sleigh design in a contemporary bedroom, available in Sleep Matters

The Standard UK size for bedframes and divans is simply in reference to what mattress dimensions. You will need to make sure you are taking into account the dimensions of the bed as a whole.

Whilst Divans generally come in two pieces, headboards (especially floor standing) do not. A 5ft headboard may be an impressive addition to the divan, but you must make sure you have adequate access to get it into the bedroom. This will include taking measurements of all the entry points, any corners or low ceilings across the whole of your house and not just the bedroom.

Taking note of measurements is especially important when it comes to bedframes. Most bedframes are substantially bigger than the mattress dimensions, both in length and width. So not only must you ensure you have adequate access, you also need to make sure it will not cause an obstruction in the bedroom.

3. Do You Need Storage?

Grey Divan Ottoman, open showing luxurious bedding inside, deep buttoned headboard. In a contemporary room with tall grey lamp on dark wood circular bedside table.

Beds are the focal point in every room, but they do take up a large amount of space in your room. It does then make sense  to try and utilise the space. The type of base you choose, will affect the type of storage you can have. Whilst some bedframes do contain drawers – which are great for storing light and relatively small items, it is more common to have a bedframe as an ottoman.

An ottoman will provide you with a wealth of storage, divan options are usually as deep as the base, and ,can hold a ton of stuff, from toys to suitcases. You will however pay more for one. Adding an ottoman to a standard King Size frame roughly is an extra £250 pound on top of the price of the frame, this might seem steep but when you consider the price of storage its a relatively small amount! Think of it as a Floordrobe.

The Best Sleeping Position For You

As it turns out, when it comes to sleep, some positions are just better for us than others. We are going to look at the three main sleeping positions in this blog and explore the benefit assuming them can have for our health and well being.

Sleeping Position 1: Side Sleepers

The most common position of all and with good reason, as this position is the most comfortable.  Just under half of us choose to sleep this way and those that do will reap the benefits. Sleeping on your side can alliveate insomnia, back and hip pain and can even ward off acid reflux. The most comfortable way to sleep on your side, involves bending your knees upwards towards your chest. This is commonly known as the foetal position.

It is also recommended that you try to sleep on your left hand side. Sleeping this way will reduce pressure to your liver and actively improve blood circulation.

Sleeping Position 2: Back Sleepers

According to the National Sleep Foundation sleeping on your back is the healthiest way to sleep, so long as you are receiving proper support from your mattress and bed (see our Sleep Guide to find out more.) Sleeping on your back allows your spine to remain in a neutral position as you sleep, allieviating added pressure on problem areas such as the neck shoulders and hips. But, back sleepers be warned – if you suffer from sleep apnea this is not the position for you and can actually be dangerous. You should also avoid sleeping on your back if you snore, as it can make the issue worse.

Sleeping Position 3: Front Sleepers

Unlike sleeping on your back, sleeping on your front can, actually help to alleviate snoring. Unfortunately for front sleepers this is where the pro’s end. This position makes it really hard to keep your spine in a neutral position. Whilst some mattresses, like Dunlopillo, can help choosing this position night after night can cause unwanted aches and pains in many problem areas.
