As it turns out, when it comes to sleep, some positions are just better for us than others. We are going to look at the three main sleeping positions in this blog and explore the benefit assuming them can have for our health and well being.
Sleeping Position 1: Side Sleepers
The most common position of all and with good reason, as this position is the most comfortable. Just under half of us choose to sleep this way and those that do will reap the benefits. Sleeping on your side can alliveate insomnia, back and hip pain and can even ward off acid reflux. It is also recommended that you try to sleep on your left hand side. Sleeping this way will reduce pressure to your liver and actively improve blood circulation.
Sleeping Position 2: Back Sleepers
According to the National Sleep Foundation sleeping on your back is the healthiest way to sleep, so long as you are receiving proper support from your mattress and bed (see our Sleep Guide to find out more.) Sleeping on your back allows your spine to remain in a neutral position as you sleep, allieviating added pressure on problem areas such as the neck shoulders and hips. But, back sleepers be warned – if you suffer from sleep apnea this is not the position for you and can actually be dangerous. You should also avoid sleeping on your back if you snore, as it can make the issue worse.
Sleeping Position 3: Front Sleepers
Unlike sleeping on your back, sleeping on your front can, actually help to alleviate snoring. Unfortunately for front sleepers this is where the pro’s end. This position makes it really hard to keep your spine in a neutral position. Whilst some mattresses, like Dunlopillo, can help choosing this position night after night can cause unwanted aches and pains in many problem areas.
